Stingless bees. Do you know what they are? People, when they think of bees, they think of apis melifera, the most common species of bee, that comes from Europe and is raised all over the world because of the honey it produces. But did you know there are over 20,000 species of bees throughout the world?!

Of that amount, 5% make colonies, the rest are solitary, but that still leaves 1,000 different species of colony-making, bee-producing bees! In the Americas (north and south) there are around 400 species of the tribe Meliponini, hence the name meliponiculture, or cultivation of meliponines.

One of the most outstanding features of these bees is that they don’t sting! For this reason they are commonly known as stingless bees. But their wonders don’t stop there, the honey they produce is of a much better quality with higher medicinal properties than regular bee honey, and they are very important pollinators of plants, trees and vines in the tropical forests.

Their cultivation is not only important to produce high-quality honey, it is also a great way to support conservation of the local forests!

This year on December 6 and 7, three different experts on meliponiculture, two Bolivian and one Colombian, come together with La Senda Verde Academy to organise this second version of the Meliponiculture course. As always, it will be hosted in the marvellous Senda Verde Ecolodge, surrounded by the rescued animals and the Yungas forest.
