A wildlife trafficking operation by the bolivian environmental and forestry police POFOMA took place last friday 24th of August in the bus station of the city of La Paz. 14 animals were found in the operation inside a bus that were being transported as a freight package.
Eight rheas, four turtles and two toucans were transported from Santa Cruz to La Paz, and were declared by the sender as Chickens. “Two persons were aprehended during the operation and are now declaring in the police. After the investigation takes place, the judge will determine their situation” said police chief Omar Agranda.
The animals were sent immediately to a local veterinarian, they were dehydrated and had suffered a lot from the travelling. Hours later, Vicky Ossio, manager of La Senda Verde, informed that three of the eight Rheas died and one of the toucans also died. The authorities are determining what is their situation and what is the best place to send these animals, but it is very probable that they will end up at La Senda Verde.
